I skimmed through a bunch of articles on this recently and dug up the main points from a few different surveys. Here's the bottom line on penis length:
The Kinsey Report states that average penis length is 6.2-6.4". This has long been a debateable study because it has arrived at those measurements. (For one thing it relied on a rather surios way of collecting data. A number of males were sent postcards in the mail which they held against the body and marked their length on.)
The Lifestyles Condom Company came to the conclusion that the average penis is 5.8" long.
Some research at the University of California found average length ot be 5.1".
A Brazilian study found that the average was 5.7".
An older study (1942 by Schonfeld Beebe) found that average size among 20-25 year-olds was 5.1" (the sample was only 54 men though).
There have also been a few internet surveys done on penis length. What were the outcomes? One found that average was 6.1", another that it was 6.4".
Quite a large range there, from the 5.1" of the University of California reserach to the 6.4" of the Kinsey report. Which one to believe? Well, I'd throw out the Kinsey report (which has been cited most often during the past 20 years) because of the lack of standardization of the testing. Same with the internet surveys.
The relatively new research by Lifestyles is the largest sample yet measured by medical personell using stndardized tests (they had 401 participants, 300 of which were able to produce measurements) so I'd use that as the most reliable guide.
The interesting thing here is that all the clinical trials come to fairly modest results compared to the surveys that didn't have standardized testing. It is evident that when left to their own devices, men will tend to "inflate" their measurements, either with poor measurement technique or through poor self-esteem (or related issues).
So, the latest and most reliable news in penis length:
5.8" is average
