I had this same theory a while back. I recently started running 3 times a week. I feel a shit load better. Cut back on smoking also. I weigh about 230 lean muscle so I am not the quikest guy. i run for maybee a mile and a half. I have a question though, should i be running my mile and a half for 12 minutes at a higher intensity,or slow down and get a full 20 minutes of cardio???

1 1/2 miles in 12 minutes is a nice solid pace. You have to be in decent shape to do it, but it's not a killer, ass kickin sort of pace. 20 min. for a mile and a half is basically a quick walk. Stay with 12 min. and set 9 min. for a goal. Any good long distance runner could do 9 in his sleep, but that's not your concern. Stick with 12 and try to work towards 9. 1 1/2 in 9 is beyond most people, but it is not track team status. It's just a very respectable and challenging pace. Of course all of this depends on your age and current condition level. If you can do 1 1/2 in 12 on a consistent basis, then you are in pretty good cardio shape. If you want to stick with that pace, I don't think that is a problem. 20 min. would bore you to death. I'm a big guy like you, and because of bumb knees and age, I firmly believe in the Nordic Track, but
1 1/2 in 20 min. you might as well be taking the dog for a walk.
