After these exercises I could usually top myself off and go to bed with a smile. I have refrained from doing so in the event that ejaculation could be counterproductive to the workout or any results. Anyone have feedback on this?

Well, "topping off", as you say, is really a personal decision of whether or not to conclude a PE session. If you will get a great feeling of satisfaction (and really, who wouldn't, eh?) :D, to sort of feel a need of relief from the pressure buildup, by all means, do so.
We do know for a fact however that after you have masturbated and actually ejaculated as well, that your hormonal levels, especially testosterone, decreases. Also, in conjunction with a drop in testosterone, you also know for a fact that the penile tissues tend to recede, or contract. The blood leaves the penis and it refracts into its flaccid, or recovery state. And every male is different in the amount of time it takes to have another erection, whether it be a few seconds or minutes or hours, whatever.
Knowing this, I personally do not masturbate to the point of ejaculating after doing PE, just for the simple fact that I would like my penis to remain in its thick, heavy, hanging state for a while longer. After a session, I like to periodically get an erection about 5-6 times in the following hour in order to pump fresh new blood into the penis to help it out in its gains, possibly. So, if I were to ejaculate, I wouldn't be able to do this.
However, this is strictly my personal opinion on the subject. I do not know if there is a negative effect or not on Pe afterwards, if it is a proven fact or not.

Never ejaculate right after you finish your workout! It puts your body under too much stress. You will benefit much more if you always wait at least four hours after exercising to ejaculate.
